Community rescues grieving North Dakota widow — by harvesting their late pal’s 1,400 acres of crops

In North Dakota, people who till the land see each other as family instead of just neighbors.

When a sudden car accident claimed the life of a dear local, the close‑knit residents of Antler united to perform one final act of kindness: they took their friend’s fields into their own hands.

Randy Fyllesvold died in September, and his widow Kharra, along with their two sons, was left in shock, unable to manage the 1,400 acres of corn and soybeans that still lay uncultivated around their home.

That’s when the tight‑lipped community stepped up.

Two of Randy’s friends—Wyatt Thompson and Andy Gates—decided to organize a large‑scale harvest of his crops.

They started by calling out for help, and the response was swift. More than 75 volunteers from nearby towns arrived within hours, driving 12 combines and 40 trucks, all ready with equipment and eager to lend a hand.

Working as a single unit, they finished the job in just a few days.

Kharra described watching the harvest of her husband’s remaining crop as “nothing short of breathtaking,” and she said she felt deeply grateful for the love and support given during such a painful time.

But the outpouring of help left no room for complaints.

“To know Randy was to love Randy,” Wyatt Thompson told the local station KFYR. “..The reach that he had was kind of endless.”

Kharra promised she would never forget what everyone did for her.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, she wrote:
“As I stood in the shop and looked around before the final Randy Fyllesvold corn harvest started, I was flooded with memories we created with all of you,”
“The day was full of emotion, but I found so much peace in watching it unfold … but from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I will always remember this and Randy would be so proud.”

She added:
“God Bless all of you and the boys and I love each and every one of you. 12 combines, 7 grain carts, over 40 trucks all for you Randy.
I know you are smiling down.”
