In New Delhi on December 10, a heated exchange unfolded in the Lok Sabha over proposed electoral reforms. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey fired back at Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, who had accused several constitutional bodies of being “captured by the RSS.” Congress leadership sharply rebuked Dubey, saying he was “looking back into the past” instead of tackling current problems.
During the Special Intensive Revision debate, Dubey blamed Congress for eroding key institutions through amendments made in the 1970s. He also dismissed Gandhi’s claim that institutions such as the Intelligence Bureau, CBI, and ED had fallen under RSS influence.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat took a vigorous tone in his response. He demanded that Dubey explain what he thinks about Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Rabindranath Tagore, noting that the MP had cited both figures while discussing the “Vande Mataram” debate. Bhagat questioned the role that Dubey supposedly plays beyond being an MP, suggesting that the “big role” might lie within the Archaeological Survey of India, where Dubey’s penchant for delving into historical matters is well known.
“Why is unemployment and the recent IndiGo crisis left unaddressed?” Bhagat asked. “Instead, Dubey keeps digging up old dirt—he’s the kind of person who could have been an honourable member of the ASI,” the MP added.
Dubey’s remarks were a direct reply to Gandhi’s earlier statements in the house. Gandhi had highlighted the “capture” of multiple state bodies, including the CBI and ED, and noted that bureaucrats aligned with the RSS ideology were systematically placed in key positions to suppress opposition.
Dubey had referenced the 1976 Swaran Singh Committee and the 42nd Constitutional Amendment, arguing that these moves reduced institutional independence during the Emergency, even turning the President’s office into a largely ceremonial one through Congress‑led changes.
