India among top nations in shipbuilding: Pralhad Joshi

Mangaluru, Nov 13 – Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi told a crowd at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) that India’s maritime industry is on a fast‑track to become one of the world’s top 10 shipbuilding powerhouses by 2030.

Joshi said the country’s shipbuilding capacity has grown sharply under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “Our production and service capabilities have risen dramatically,” he added, stressing that the port sector fuels exports and that the central government is cutting logistics costs to make trade smoother.

The New Mangalore Port, Karnataka’s seventh‑largest, is a key gateway for southern India. Joshi highlighted the port’s role in boosting the nation’s economy through modernisation, better coastal links and foreign investment. “These moves have turned India into a major hub in the global maritime economy,” he told reporters.

He also pointed out India’s rapid climb in global trade, saying the country has already become the world’s fourth‑largest economy and is poised to move into the top three, matching economic giants such as the United States and China. “Manufacturing and exports are growing fast,” Joshi said.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the port’s ambitious cargo plans. “NMPA should handle 100 million tonnes in the next 22 years,” he said. “By 2047, Modi’s vision is for Indian ports to move 10,000 million metric tonnes.” Sonowal added that the port is now 100 percent solar‑powered and boasts a range of green initiatives, from robotic firefighting systems to drone surveillance.

“Several advanced technological projects are underway,” he noted, framing the port as a model of sustainability and efficiency.

With leaders like Joshi and Sonowal championing investment and innovation, India’s maritime sector is set to rise on the global stage, promising a boost for exports, jobs and economic growth.
