New Delhi, Nov 14 – In the latest Bihar assembly polls, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Tejashwi Yadav kept his seat in Raghopur, but the margin shrank compared with past victories. The 36‑year‑old leader beat BJP’s Satish Kumar by 14,500 votes, taking 1,18,597 votes against the BJP candidate’s 1,04,065. Tejashwi secured nearly 50 % of the vote in the constituency.
His past results show a steady decline. In 2015 he beat Satish Kumar by 22,733 votes, capturing 49.15 % of the vote. The 2020 election was stronger – a 38,174‑vote win and 48.74 % share – as the RJD captured 75 seats and became the largest party in the 243‑seat Bihar assembly, with Tejashwi becoming Leader of the Opposition.
Now, the RJD—still the main force in the Mahagathbandhan opposition alliance—contested 143 seats. It currently leads only in five and holds fourteen wins, with twenty declared winners so far. The party’s performance could become one of Bihar’s worst election outcomes, considering it won only 22 seats in 2010.
Tejashwi has been eager to position himself as the next chief minister. Congress leader Ashok Gehlot ultimately announced him as the party’s CM candidate, though early reluctance had raised doubts. The coalition’s manifesto, branded “Bihar Ka Tejashwi Prann,” was meant to unite voters under his leadership. After the joint Mahagathbandhan “Voter Adhikar Yatra” ended on Sept 1, Tejashwi toured key districts solo to gauge public sentiment.
A son of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi rose quickly through RJD ranks after years of shying from the spotlight. Formerly a state cricket star, he joined politics under his father’s guidance and earned senior positions, including Deputy Chief Minister, before challenging Nitish Kumar’s government.
With his party’s future on the line, Tejashwi’s performance in Raghopur mirrors a broader trend of declining support for the RJD and the Mahagathbandhan in this electoral cycle. As voters head to the polls, all eyes will be on whether he can shore up his party’s standing and secure a chief ministership in Bihar.
