In a shocking turn of events, police in West Bengal have linked a local gold trader’s murder to a senior government officer.
The investigation, which began after a family complaint, shows that Rajganj Block Development Officer (BDO) Prashant Barman may have played a key role. Police source that the two people arrested—a BDO’s driver Raju Dhali and a friend, Tufan Thapa—confessed to the killing and named Barman as an accomplice.
The case centers around the murder of Swapan Kamilya, a gold trader from the West Midnapore district, who was attacked in his shop in Duttabad. Witnesses reported a blue‑beamed car—believed to be the BDO’s—arrived at the shop. Kamilya was struck with a belt and a stick, lost consciousness and later died. His body was hidden in a car and left on a canal bank near New Town, close to Jatragachi.
After the crime, the driver took Barman and the victim’s body to Dum Dum Airport, allegedly transporting the deceased to the airport in the same vehicle that Kamilya had arrived in. A few days later, police located and seized the body in New Town’s New Town area.
Raju Dhali, who lives in Rajarhat, and Tufan Thapa were apprehended last Saturday. Police say they admitted to participating in the kidnapping and murder, and named Barman as “closely involved.” The BDO, however, denied any role in the incident.
Local residents are stunned. Swapan Kamilya’s family had already filed a complaint in Jalpaiguri against Barman for kidnapping and murder. The police are now working hard to verify the new evidence and bring the truth to light.
