Long Island kid stops burglar, leaps from window in ‘Home Alone’-style heroics: cops

In a scene straight out of a holiday movie, a 12‑year‑old boy from Medford, New York, thwarted a burglar on Tuesday by leaping from his bedroom window and calling the police.

The incident happened shortly after 12:50 p.m. on Eagle Avenue, where the boy was home alone. He heard glass shatter downstairs and the creak of footsteps in the kitchen. Realizing something had gone wrong, he opened the window and dropped to the curb. From there he spotted Christian Garcia, 53, who had slipped in through a broken kitchen window.

“Hey, just go get the phone and call 911,” the boy told himself, before dialing the emergency services. Police trucks arrived within three minutes, and Garcia was taken into custody inside the home. He faces charges of burglary and possession of burglar tools.

The boy was not hurt in the incident. His quick thinking and readiness to act likely prevented a much larger threat to the family’s safety.

Garcia is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday at the First District Court in Central Islip. As of now, he remains in custody awaiting the hearing.
