Darjeeling, West Bengal – Heavy rains in North Bengal have triggered widespread landslides and flooding in the Mirik area, killing at least seven people and leaving two still missing. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has moved three teams from Darjeeling, Siliguri and Alipurduar to the disaster‑hit region. Two more teams from Malda and Kolkata are on the way.
Rescue crews are working round the clock to clear debris and pull survivors from the ruined roads. The side of the road at Dilaram on the Kurseong‑Darjeeling stretch has been blocked by a massive landslide. Rohini Road has also been shut after a slide at Gourishankar, while Tindharia Road remains open and is being used to evacuate tourists from Mirik. Police say the evacuation should finish in three to four hours.
In Jalpaiguri district, the Porajhar area in Rajganj block is suffering severe waterlogging. Heavy rain has flooded homes and farmland, and a section of the embankment on the Mahananda River collapsed, forcing many residents to abandon their houses.
Vehicle movement has been restricted on the Siliguri‑Darjeeling National Highway (SH‑12) after part of the Dudhia iron bridge collapsed. Local authorities are working to keep the road passable and to protect nearby communities from further damage.
The NDRF continues to mobilise resources for search and rescue, while police and local officials focus on evacuating tourists and restoring road connectivity in this hardest‑hit part of West Bengal.
