Kanhaiya Kumar ahead of CWC meeting

Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar sharply criticized Bihar’s “double-engine government” on Tuesday, linking it to vote theft and warning that such a setup threatens democracy. Speaking in Patna ahead of a key Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Kumar argued that battling alleged vote manipulation is essential for protecting jobs, curbing migration, and tackling everyday struggles like inflation and unemployment.

“We have a clear stand on saving the Constitution and democracy,” Kumar told reporters. “A government built on vote theft leads to paper leaks and lets inflation run wild. When thieves control the reins, hooligans gain confidence. That’s not good governance—it’s a criminal regime. Fighting vote theft means saving democracy, creating employment, and halting migration.”

Kumar also addressed recent tensions between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers. The clash stemmed from alleged insults against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted the choice of Sadaqat Ashram—a historic site tied to India’s independence movement—as the venue for the CWC meeting. “Sadaqat Ashram honors Maulana Mazharul Haque and served as home to India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad,” Kumar said. “It’s no ordinary party office; it’s linked to our freedom struggle. Just days ago, attackers who idolize Mahatma Gandhi’s killer targeted this heritage spot. Holding the CWC here shows our ironclad commitment to the Constitution and democracy.”

The attack on the Bihar Pradesh Congress Office at Sadaqat Ashram happened on August 29, as condemned by Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain at the time.

Kumar arrived in Patna late Monday for the meeting, which kicks off today. Senior leaders are pouring into the city, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who flew in from Delhi. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah touched down at Patna airport on Tuesday, joining the party’s top decision-makers.

Congress MP Randeep Surjewala, also in town, praised Bihar’s role in Indian politics. “This land has scripted history from Champaran to now,” he said. “The CWC decisions under Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge will have lasting impact.”

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel echoed the sentiment, nodding to Rahul Gandhi’s recent comments on caste census and vote theft. “He dropped an atomic bomb last month. Now, we’re gearing up for the hydrogen bomb,” Baghel quipped.

The gathering comes amid a nationwide Congress push against alleged vote tampering, including a signature campaign sweeping the country. With Bihar Assembly elections looming by late 2025, state issues like unemployment in Bihar, rising inflation, crime rates, and women’s safety top the agenda. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal clarified the focus: “This CWC isn’t just about elections—we hold them often. But we’ll discuss the national agitation on vote theft, the signature drive, and broader political challenges. Bihar polls will naturally come up too.”

The meeting unfolds at Sadaqat Ashram, Congress’s Bihar headquarters. Expected attendees include party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, Bihar unit president Rajesh Ram, state in-charge Krishna Allavaru, and Legislature Party leader Shakeel Ahmed Khan.

Allavaru, speaking at a Monday press conference, stressed the party’s plans. “We’ll address vote chori (theft) head-on, plus Bihar’s woes: soaring unemployment, inflation, crime spikes, crimes against women, and even the so-called surrender to Trump,” he said. “Congress will speak for Bihar here, but also for the nation.”
