Mumbai, Sep 20 () – Maharashtra’s government, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is cracking down hard on drug-related crimes with a strict zero-tolerance policy. This move comes as police face growing challenges from drug issues and the need for better law and order to help India become a global superpower.
Speaking at a conference titled “Reimagining the Police Force for India’s Economic Development,” held to celebrate the 10th Foundation Day of the Indian Police Foundation, Fadnavis stressed the importance of unity. “Unity in the police force and society cuts down negativity and drives sustainable progress for the state and country,” he said.
Fadnavis highlighted how crimes have evolved over time. To keep up, Maharashtra created a new police organizational structure in 2023. The state also launched a cutting-edge cybersecurity lab to speed up investigations. “Other countries want labs like ours,” he noted. Thanks to AI, police now solve complex cases much faster.
The chief minister praised the Constitution’s built-in checks and balances for the police. Many officers have used existing laws to make big improvements. He added that old British-era laws like the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act need updates to fit modern democracy. “We must embrace new technology and digital tools to make policing more effective,” Fadnavis said.
Online crimes are surging on social media and platforms, so police need quick tools like data analytics, machine learning, and digital tracking. Fadnavis pointed out India’s economic shift: once focused on agriculture, it now relies on the service sector for 55 to 65 percent of growth. “We have to grasp these changes and the unique challenges they bring to both sectors,” he explained.
While pushing for police modernization, Fadnavis urged keeping timeless values alive. He expressed pride in the high standards of Maharashtra Police and Mumbai Police. “It’s great to see police talking about India’s economic development today,” he said. He promised the government would act on fresh ideas from the event’s brainstorming sessions.
The conference featured talks on police governance, safeguarding digital borders, and teaming up with industries for a stable investment environment worldwide.
