In Shillong, Meghalaya, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly wrapped up its Autumn Session on a high note with a big announcement. Speaker Thomas A Sangma declared that Limison D Sangma, the MLA from Raksamgre, has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker—without any opposition!
This smooth transition came right after Timothy D Shira stepped down from the role. The opposition parties chose not to nominate anyone, leading to Limison D Sangma’s unanimous win in the Meghalaya Assembly election. It’s a clear sign of trust across the political divide.
Grateful for the support, Limison D Sangma shared his thanks with everyone. “I think the opposition skipped fielding a candidate because they believe in me. I’m truly thankful to my party colleagues and the opposition for this unanimous election,” he said during the session.
Now stepping into this key position, he stressed the need for neutrality. “As Deputy Speaker, I must stay impartial. I’ll treat members from the ruling party and opposition equally, ensuring fairness in every Assembly debate,” Limison D Sangma promised. He wants to keep things running smoothly and boost the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s productivity.
He knows the real work comes from the members themselves, but he’s committed to helping out. “I’ll do my best to stay neutral and guide productive discussions,” he added.
Balancing his new duties won’t be easy, especially with his roots in Raksamgre. But Limison D Sangma assured everyone he’ll handle both roles well. “I’ll juggle my responsibilities as Deputy Speaker and as Raksamgre’s representative. When the Assembly needs me, I’ll be here—and I’ll keep serving my constituency too,” he said.
Looking to the future, he’s excited about modernizing the Meghalaya Assembly. “We’ll bring in fresh ideas and tech where it fits, teaming up with our Speaker to build stronger democracy and connect better with the public,” he shared.
In his final words, Limison D Sangma once again thanked his supporters. “I’m so grateful to my party and the opposition for their faith in me. I’ll work hard to maintain the dignity of this Deputy Speaker role with complete neutrality and fairness.”
