China Open squash: Anahat makes winning start; Abhay, Senthilkumar bow out

Anahat Singh, India’s top women’s table‑tennis player, opened the China Open PSA in Shanghai with a decisive win that set a strong tone for the rest of the tournament. The 17‑year‑old, ranked 38th in the world, beat Egypt’s Menna Hamed 11‑6, 11‑8, 11‑3 in the round‑of‑32. Her next challenge is Egyptian eighth seed and world No. 15 Sana Ibrahim—a promising match for the Indian teen.

In the men’s event, two fellow Delhi players fell in the opening round. Abhay Singh was defeated by France’s world No. 17 Baptiste Masotti, who won 11‑8, 11‑7, 11‑4. Velavan Senthilkumar also lost, coming up against Egypt’s Mohamed Abouelghar with a score of 8‑11, 12‑14, 6‑11.

Anahat’s success comes on the back of a strong showing at the Canadian Open in Toronto. The young star made the semifinals of the PSA Silver tournament, winning a dramatic quarterfinal against world No. 7 Tinne Gilis. Earlier in the event, she defeated France’s world No. 20 and sixth seed Melissa Alves 12‑10, 12‑10, 8‑11, 11‑2 in a 41‑minute match.

She has already earned medals on the Asian stage, taking bronze in both the women’s team and doubles at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, and winning gold at the 2025 Asian Championships in Kuala Lumpur. With her rapid rise and growing international experience, Anahat Singh is positioned as one of India’s brightest prospects in table tennis.
