Municipality recruitment scam: ED raids West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose’s residence, 10 other places

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) started a fresh raid on Friday, searching the home and offices of West Bengal’s Minister Sujit Bose. The team moved through 11 locations around the state, probing Bose’s personal and official properties for clues in the growing municipal recruitment scam.
Bose, who chairs the state’s Fire and Emergency Services ministry, is not the only political figure targeted. Earlier this week, the ED also raided the residences of MLA and Minister Rathin Ghosh, who handles Food and Supplies, after stumbling on related evidence. These actions follow an investigation that began with a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The Calcutta High Court tipped the scales when it ordered the FIR’s registration, noting that the scam goes beyond school hiring. The case first surfaced while police were probing alleged irregularities in West Bengal’s school jobs. While seizing documents from a suspect named Ayan Sil, investigators found records of municipal hiring fraud. In April, the High Court asked the CBI to look deeper into how municipal positions were filled.
Today’s raid is part of a broader scrutiny by the ED and CBI of municipal recruitment practices across West Bengal. The agencies aim to uncover how officials might have carved out undeserved jobs, and whether public funds were misused. The investigation continues as authorities sift through files, offer statements, and grab evidence from government offices and homes alike.
