In Hyderabad, shoppers flocked to meat shops on Wednesday, racing to stock up before a citywide shutdown kicked in. The rush came right before Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and the upcoming Dussehra festival, thanks to a strict order from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
Local authorities have directed all meat shops within GHMC limits to close tomorrow, honoring Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. To make sure everyone follows the rules, GHMC officials are urging staff and officers to pitch in fully. They’ll keep a close watch to respect the holiday’s importance.
One shopper, Nagesh, navigated the packed crowds at a bustling meat stall. “Shops will be closed tomorrow for Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra, so I came today to buy some in advance,” he told . “It’s super crowded because of that—everyone’s doing the same.”
The move has sparked backlash from AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi. He slammed the meat ban in Hyderabad as illogical, especially during Independence Day celebrations, and called it a violation of people’s rights to liberty, privacy, livelihood, culture, nutrition, and religion.
