A drone‑captured clip that quickly went viral shows a tiger shark making a slow, deliberate swim into ankle‑deep water on a Perth beach, only to run up against a groodle named Olive who’s wading in the shallows.
The video, shot by drone enthusiast Lexo Aveleyra, lets us see the striped predator glide through crystal‑clear water just a few metres from the sand before Olive comes right up to it.
In the frame the shark and the dog get as close as a few centimetres, each showing a split‑second reaction. Olive darts back toward the shore, while the shark thumps its tail and turns to retreat into deeper water.
The whole exchange lasts only a few seconds, but the brevity of the encounter and how close the shark came to the beach surprised everyone who watched.
Lexo posted the shot on Instagram, adding the caption: “Yesterday, on a 104° summer day with storms rolling through parts of Perth, I headed to the beach for a swim, then stayed to relax and fly my drone.”
He continued: “I spotted a beautiful tiger shark, one of many that return to our coastline around this time of year. Whether they’re resting, nursing, or simply passing through — they are here.” He added, “I followed the shark as it cruised toward shallower water, waiting for it to surface for a clean shot. Suddenly, it turned back — likely sensing movement in the water.”
He went on to say, “To my complete surprise, the shark went in to investigate a beautiful groodle named Olive, who had done the same. A brief, face‑to‑face encounter.” He finished, “Watching this unfold on my controller left me shocked, and I briefly lost framing. I knew I had just captured a rare moment.”
Outside the caption, a comment from a viewer echoed the community’s reaction: “Sharks are in their natural environment. Entering the ocean — whether swimming, surfing, or walking a dog — is always a personal choice. Signs or no signs, awareness is what matters. We all know what lives in the ocean,” she said.
Another viewer wrote, “Wow that was right up to the shoreline! So unsafe,” while a third added, “This is such a close call, but absolutely stunning footage.” A fourth commenter noted, “And people roll their eyes at me when I tell them I don’t let my dogs do any sea or river swimming,” and expressed its own disbelief.
Tiger sharks are known to move into shallow coastal waters during the warmer months, where they hunt stingrays, fish and turtles. The footage serves as a reminder of the power and presence of these creatures right on our beaches.
