Jaipur:
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold‑wave alert for Rajasthan starting on December 3, signalling that winter will hit harder than usual. The warning follows a noticeable drop in temperatures across many districts. Mornings have become foggy, and the weak sunshine that usually brightens the day has left the region feeling even colder. Fortunately, the last few days have offered a brief reprieve.
A western disturbance and a weakening northerly wind kept night temperatures above 10 °C in places such as Sikar and Pilani (Jhunjhunu). By Sunday night, however, temperatures fell sharply. In Sikar, the lowest temperature dipped 2.5 °C to reach 9 °C. Other areas saw similar falls: Sriganganagar dropped 2 °C, Alwar and Pilani fell 1.5 °C each, and Bikaner plunged 3.5 °C, settling at 7.3 °C. The chilly extreme of 5.9 °C was recorded in Lunkaransar near Bikaner. Light fog in Sikar’s mornings added to the biting cold.
Radheshyam Sharma, Director at the Jaipur Meteorological Center, explained that the current western disturbance over the northern hilly states has temporarily eased the cold winds. This system should stay active until around December 2–3. Once it moves on, the icy breezes from the Himalayas will sweep back across the plains, raising the chill across Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh.
For December 3 and 4, the IMD has set a yellow alert for Sikar and Jhunjhunu, warning of cold‑wave conditions and likely further temperature drops.
Sunday saw night temperatures slip 1–3 °C in several regions. Cities like Sikar, Alwar, Churu, and Sriganganagar recorded single‑digit lows. The same pattern is expected to continue through Monday and Tuesday, with colder winds strengthening by midweek. Even daytime conditions are cooler, as weak sunlight was noted in districts such as Jaipur, Ajmer, Nagaur, Sikar, Jodhpur, and Barmer.
Maximum temperatures across Rajasthan also fell with the intensifying winter. Barmer topped the list with a daytime high of 30.4 °C, followed by Jodhpur and Jalore at 29.4 °C, Chittorgarh at 28.6 °C, and Phalodi at 27.2 °C. Udaipur and Kota reached 27.4 °C, while Jaipur, the state capital, saw 26 °C. Bikaner recorded 26.6 °C and Churu matched Jaipur at 26 °C. On the northern side, Sriganganagar hit 25.7 °C, and Sirohi had the lowest maximum at just 22.1 °C, indicating a noticeably colder day in several areas.
