Ssujata Mehta seeks soulful scripts on OTT: ‘It offers depth’

Veteran actress Sujata Mehta is making waves once again, this time on stage with her captivating solo play “Sujata Rangrangili.” This one-woman show blends memories, humor, bold defiance, and raw truth, stirring up excitement in Mumbai’s theatre scene.

After shining in films and theatre for years, Sujata is eyeing the booming OTT platforms next. These digital spaces are becoming hotspots for honest storytelling, and she’s ready to dive in. “Theatre taught me presence, cinema gave me visibility, but OTT offers depth,” she shared thoughtfully. “There’s finally room for characters who breathe, bruise, and bloom,” she added with enthusiasm.

Sujata Mehta first grabbed attention with her powerful role in the 1987 film “Pratighaat” opposite Nana Patekar. She went on to deliver memorable performances in Bollywood hits like “Pratigyabadh” with Mithun Chakraborty, “Dhartiputra” alongside Mammootty, Jayaprada, and Farah, “Jung” featuring Aditya Pancholi, Mithun Chakraborty, and Ajay Devgn, “Meri Jung” with Jeetendra, “Yateem” starring Sunny Deol and Farah, “Tyagi” with Rajinikanth and Shakti Kapoor, “Gunaah” alongside Sunny Deol and Dimple Kapadia, “Gunehgar Kaun” with Raj Babbar and Paresh Rawal, “Sadhana” featuring Rishi Kapoor and Raj Babbar, “Dhaad” with KK Menon, Raghubir Yadav, and Sandeep Kulkarni, “Gunahon Ka Devta” starring Mithun Chakraborty, Aditya Pancholi, and Danny Denzongpa, “Judge Mujrim” with Jeetendra, “Anmol” alongside Rishi Kapoor, and “Teen Deewarein” with Naseeruddin Shah and Jackie Shroff. She also appeared in “Kanwarlal” with Jeetendra and Raj Babbar.

On the small screen, Sujata has entertained audiences in popular TV shows like “Andaz,” “Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka,” and “Shrikant.” But theatre remains her true passion. In her earlier play “Chitkar,” she played a woman battling paranoid schizophrenia—a heart-wrenching role that wowed global audiences and ran for over 800 shows.

Now, in “Sujata Rangrangili,” Sujata brings alive different shades of womanhood through her solo performance. Critics are loving it, praising her energy and depth. If you’re a fan of strong storytelling and talented performers, this play is a must-watch in the world of Indian theatre and Bollywood comebacks.
