New Delhi – On October 12, 2025, soldiers and civilians will begin a 20‑day joint civil‑military trek to Athupopu from the Anini Military Garrison in Dibang Valley. The expedition cuts across Arunachal Pradesh’s rugged hills, up to 3,500 meters high near the India‑China border.
The trek celebrates unity and adventure at the frontier, bringing the Indian Army and local residents closer. By marching together, soldiers and civilians embody “Soldiers as Citizens in Uniform,” building trust and respect between the forces and the people of Dibang Valley.
Athupopu is a sacred site for the Idu Mishmi tribe, seen as a mythical gateway for spirits heading to eternity. The route is steeped in myth and local folklore, giving hikers a glimpse into the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
“This partnership shows the Army’s commitment to nation‑building and the strong bonds we have with Dibang Valley’s people,” said Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, PRO Defence Guwahati.
The journey starts from Maliney, the last motorable village in the district, 200 km from Roing, the district headquarters. The 2025 trek is the fourth edition, following previous runs in 2023 and earlier years.
Arunachal Pradesh’s chief secretary, Pema Khandu, highlighted in a 2023 tweet how the trek, organized by the Dao Division and the Spear Corps of the Indian Army alongside local tourism and administration teams, strengthens civil‑military friendship.
Join the adventure, witness the stunning landscapes, and experience the deep-rooted traditions of Arunachal Pradesh’s borderlands.
