Gujarat’s Animal Husbandry Minister Raghavji Patel joined a key virtual meeting of livestock ministers from across India, stepping up for his state in discussions aimed at supercharging the country’s livestock and dairy industry.
The session, led by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh and joined by Minister of State S.P. Singh Baghel, zeroed in on big changes in laws, policies, institutions, and processes. These reforms tie directly into India’s push to become a developed nation by 2047, with a strong focus on building a robust livestock sector.
Patel, flanked by department secretary Sandip Kumar and director Dr. Falguni Thakkar, shared how Gujarat has already mapped out its path forward. The state rolled out a “Vision Document 2047” that lines up perfectly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goals. At the top of the list? Ramp up milk production, squeeze more yield from each animal, and grow dairy product exports to new heights.
He stressed that the ideas floated in the meeting could lay a solid groundwork for Gujarat to hit these targets. Patel spotlighted the need to protect indigenous cattle breeds, tackle antimicrobial resistance in animals, and set up the Indian Council of Veterinary Research (ICVR). This would push forward a “One Health” strategy that links human, animal, and environmental well-being.
Patel called on the central government to launch a Central Livestock Feed Act. Such a law would standardize feed quality nationwide, cut costs for farmers, lift product standards, and open doors for bigger international exports. He also pushed to bring commercial poultry under the National Livestock Mission and roll out support for cutting-edge breeding tech like sexed semen and IVF to modernize farms.
Beyond that, Patel argued for treating livestock on the same level as agriculture when it comes to perks like income tax breaks, lower electricity rates, and easier access to loans. “This would mark a revolutionary step to power up the rural economy,” he said.
In the end, Patel painted an optimistic picture: “Teamwork between the Centre and states will kick off a fresh chapter for India’s livestock sector. It means better incomes for farmers and turns animal husbandry into a real engine for growth in rural areas.”
