NYC brute who killed tarot card reader he thought cursed his family slapped with prison time
Prison is now the looming outcome.
A furious Queens patron, Giuseppe Canzani, 45, was handed a 23‑year sentence on Thursday after he fatally shot his tarot card reader, Anna Torres, 51. According to prosecutors, Canzani fired a .45‑caliber handgun at Torres’ Ozone Park home in May 2022 because he believed she had “a witch”—that she had placed a spell on his family.
“Broad daylight,” recounted Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, “the defendant opened fire at Torres’ front door, wounding pedestrians that rushed for cover.” She noted the incident broken the victim’s family and left the Ozone Park neighborhood stunned. “Nothing can undo what happened, but we hope today’s sentencing offers Ms. Torres’ loved ones another step toward healing,” Katz added.
The 45‑year‑old shot Torres in the neck and arm, then fled in a Chevrolet Traversé. Surveillance footage shows him loading the gun and heading back to the vehicle. He later appeared at the 106th Police Precinct on May 5, 2022, where he was escorted out. Canzani pleaded guilty to first‑degree manslaughter in September.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder imposed the 23‑year term, followed by five years of post‑release supervision.
