Everything to know about Election Day 2025 in NYC as the Big Apple elects a new mayor

Election day has arrived for New York City. The first polls open early at 6 a.m., and voting continues until 9 p.m. across all five boroughs, so voters can still head to their local station before clocks strike nine.

The city’s biggest focus today is the mayor’s race. Three candidates stand in the running: left‑wing Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo running on an independent line, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The contest has attracted national headlines, with Trump even weighing in on Mamdani’s rapid rise. Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the June primary, is trying to regain ground, while Sliwa remains stubbornly in the race despite pressure from the White House to drop out and let Cuomo move up.

Alongside the mayoral vote, New‑Yorkers will decide on other citywide positions—comptroller and public advocate—and choose city council seats and new district attorneys. Six ballot propositions also hang in the balance; a majority vote on any of them would amend the city charter.

Early voting this election cycle set a new record, with more than 730,000 ballots cast over nine days. That high turnout could push Tuesday night totals above two million for the first time since 1969, when a three‑way mayoral contest drew 81 % of registered voters.

Recent polls show a tight race. One poll puts Cuomo within four points of Mamdani, while another shows the far‑left candidate leading by 26 points. Sliwa is generally projected to finish third, hovering in the mid‑teens of support. With the polls still open, New Yorkers are encouraged to line up early and stay in line until closing; the city is required to accept any votes cast before 9 p.m.

The city’s online voting locator makes it easy to find your polling place. Just enter your address on the official NYC voter website, and your station will appear instantly. Registration closed on Oct. 25, so you cannot sign up on Election Day. If you already provided a valid ID during registration, you won’t need to show any additional identification at the polls.

As the city heads to the polls, the stakes are clear: the next mayor will shape New York City’s future for the next four years. Stay tuned for the results, which are expected to start streaming in minutes after the last ballot is cast, though most outlets will call the race after 10 p.m.
