Zubeen Garg’s bandmate alleges singer was “poisoned”, foreign venue chosen to “conceal conspiracy”

Zubeen Garg, the popular Assamese singer, died in Singapore on September 19 after an incident that authorities described as a drowning. But his bandmates say the death was no accident.

According to police documents, Singer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami claims that manager Siddharth Sharma and Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta plotted a scheme to poison Garg. The plan, they say, was hidden by holding the event overseas.

Police have acted on those claims. On Wednesday, both Sharma and Mahanta were arrested by the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT). The next day, the SIT arrested two more singers, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta. The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Guwahati has ordered a 14‑day police custody for all four suspects.

Details in the “Grounds of Arrest” note say Sharma was staying in a Singapore hotel with Garg. When the singer began gasping for air, Sharma allegedly shouted, “Jabo de, jabo de” and a told others that Garg was simply having acid reflux. The note also claims that Sharma took control of a yacht’s steering while its sailor was on board, causing the boat to wobble and putting all passengers at risk. Goswami argues that Garg was a skilled swimmer and could not have drowned; he says the real cause was poison.

Assam police are handling the case under Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta. A separate inquiry commission led by Gauhati High Court Justice Soumitra Saikia has been set up to examine the death’s circumstances. Meanwhile, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta has petitioned the Supreme Court to move the investigation from the state police to a central body such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The investigation is still in early stages. Police are reviewing footage from the yacht, interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. The case has drawn attention in Assam and beyond, raising questions about safety and accountability for artists traveling abroad for performances.

As the probe continues, the public watches closely while authorities work to determine whether Zubeen Garg’s death was a tragic accident or the result of a deliberate plot.
