‘They just announced the squad’: Jadeja reveals he was unaware about vice-captaincy role for WI Tests
Ravindra Jadeja got a big surprise when he learned he’d serve as vice-captain for India’s upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies. The veteran all-rounder shared that the team didn’t give him any heads-up before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad, where he spotted “VC” next to his name.
Speaking to bcci.tv ahead of the first Test, which kicks off Thursday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the 36-year-old Jadeja said, “They didn’t say anything to me. They just announced the team and I saw that besides my name the VC is written, so I was very happy.” He added that such gestures from the management, captain Shubman Gill, and coach always boost a player’s confidence. “At the end of the day, you are always happy to do good and share your experience with the team.”
Jadeja steps up because regular vice-captain Rishabh Pant is sidelined with an injury to his right foot. Pant picked up the blow during India’s fifth Test against England at The Oval in July-August and hasn’t recovered in time for this India vs West Indies Test series.
The all-rounder called the role “very special” and a sign of respect from the team. “They gave me respect because the management, captain, and coach have decided to give me some extra responsibility. I am very happy to do it and whenever the team needed my experience and needed me to say anything regarding planning, I am always happy to do it,” Jadeja shared.
Jadeja shone brightly on India’s recent tour of England, finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 516 runs at an average of 86. He notched one century and five half-centuries, even batting lower down the order.
In his red-ball cricket career, the Saurashtra-born star has racked up 3,886 runs at an average of 37.73, including five centuries and 27 fifties. He’s also claimed 330 wickets at an average of 25.12, with 15 five-wicket hauls under his belt. Fans are eager to see how Jadeja contributes in this key series.
