New polypropylene plant to boost jobs, economic growth in Assam: Hardeep Puri

Boost for Assam’s Petrochemical Future: New Plant to Create Jobs and Drive Growth

In Guwahati, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared exciting news on Sunday about a major boost for India’s petrochemical sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a state-of-the-art polypropylene plant at the Numaligarh refinery in Assam. This 360 KTPA capacity facility, built at a whopping Rs 7,231 crore, promises to strengthen the country’s petrochemical industry while opening doors to new jobs and socio-economic progress in the Northeast.

Petrochemicals are everywhere in our daily lives—they help make everything from glucose bottles and medical syringes to plastic pipes and car dashboards. Minister Puri called this plant a game-changer for Northeast India’s future, saying it will steer the region’s growth in a big way and give India’s petrochemical sector a solid foundation.

Prime Minister Modi didn’t stop there. He announced projects worth around Rs 18,000 crore for Assam, highlighting the state’s role in powering India’s energy needs. Earlier that day in Darrang, he laid foundation stones for key connectivity and health projects. At Numaligarh, he kicked off energy security initiatives that will supercharge Assam’s development path.

"Assam truly strengthens India’s energy capabilities," the Prime Minister said, pointing out how petroleum products from the state fuel the nation’s progress. These new projects aim to spark industrial growth, speed up development, and create fresh opportunities for farmers and youth. He congratulated the people of Assam for these milestones.

The PM also touched on India’s energy challenges. For years, the country relied heavily on imports for crude oil and gas, shelling out lakhs of crores every year to foreign nations—which only boosted jobs abroad. But things are changing fast. India is now on a self-reliant journey to meet its own energy demands, reducing that dependency and building a stronger future at home.

This development marks a big step for Assam’s economy and India’s push towards energy independence, with the new polypropylene plant set to play a starring role in petrochemical growth.
