India’s opener Abhishek Sharma played a key role in his team’s 41-run victory over Bangladesh during the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup 2025 at Dubai International Stadium. On Wednesday, Sharma scored a quick 75 runs off just 37 balls, helping India set a strong foundation against Bangladesh’s bowlers.
Sharma explained that he and partner Shubman Gill took their time to settle in early on. The Bangladesh attack swung and seamed the ball on a fresh pitch, so the duo focused on watching a few deliveries before attacking. “Shubman and I decided to have a look and then go,” Sharma said after the match. Their 77-run opening stand came in only 6.2 overs, giving India a flying start in the cricket match.
Gill added 29 runs before the middle order struggled to build on the momentum. India finished at 168 for 6 in their 20 overs, a total that proved enough as Bangladesh fell short by 41 runs.
Sharma credited his approach to reading the game and the field placements. “I go with the flow,” he told reporters. “When it’s in my range, I go after it—even if it’s the first ball—to grab the powerplay for my team. Some bowlers aim for a wicket right away, so I adapt.” He always checks the fielders before playing his shots, he added, which helped him dominate on the day.
The star batter also highlighted his intense practice sessions as a big factor in his success. “In the nets, I play a lot of balls and try all my shots, but I focus on not getting out,” Sharma said. This preparation lets him stay confident without risking early dismissals.
With this win, India became the first team to book a spot in the Asia Cup 2025 final. Sri Lanka is now out of the tournament, while Pakistan and Bangladesh face a high-stakes showdown on September 25 for the last final berth.
India wraps up their Super Fours campaign against Sri Lanka on September 26 at Dubai International Stadium. The final takes place on September 28, with India’s opponent depending on the Pakistan vs Bangladesh result.
