S. Korean trade minister meets new Indian envoy over economic, trade ties

On Wednesday, Trade Minister Yeo Han‑koo met with the newly appointed Indian Ambassador to South Korea, Gourangalal Das, to talk about ways to deepen economic and trade ties, officials said.

Both sides agreed that the foundation for stronger economic and trade relations should be reinforced by advancing their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). They pledged to keep close lines of communication so that talks to upgrade the CEPA could resume soon, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources added, reporting that Yonhap had covered the story.

Yeo asked India to give its support to South Korean companies operating in the country, noting that they still face non‑tariff barriers and other challenges. More than 670 Korean firms—including Hyundai Motor Co. and LG Electronics Inc.—are currently active in India.

“India is a key country in the region and one of South Korea’s most important economic partners. I hope the two countries will deepen their cooperation by creating new economic achievements in shipbuilding, critical minerals and other high‑potential sectors,” Yeo said.

In return, Das said he would work actively to further advance bilateral economic and trade cooperation during his tenure, the ministry reported.

Earlier this month, President Lee Jae Myung held consecutive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, discussing ways to strengthen bilateral co‑operation, the presidential office said on Sunday.

During his meeting with Modi, Lee expressed a desire to deepen collaboration across the economy, culture, security and people‑to‑people exchanges, the office added.

Modi praised South Korea’s advanced shipbuilding capabilities and the small‑group cooperative framework in future‑oriented sectors such as shipbuilding, while also expressing a hope to strengthen bilateral ties in the defence industry, the office said.

“The two leaders agreed on the need to boost bilateral cooperation in various areas, such as artificial intelligence and the defence industry, and push for working‑level consultations,” the office released.

Modi invited Lee to visit India during the talks, and Lee said he hopes to go there soon to further promote their bilateral ties, the office noted.
