8 in 10 Indians embrace return to office policy, flexibility, well-being major concern: Report

Mumbai, Nov. 4 – A new JLL survey shows that most Indians are ready to go back to the office, but they also want more flexibility and better well‑being support.

What the data say

  • Return‑to‑office (RTO) sentiment: 82 % of Indian employees have to work from the office, yet 8 in 10 of them are happy about it.
  • Sectors leading the shift: Tech firms, financial services (BSFI), and education are the biggest drivers of RTO adoption.
  • Workplace satisfaction: 83 % of workers say their workplace is close to ideal, beating the Asia‑Pacific average of 64 %.
  • Flexibility matters: 60 % of employees say flexibility is the top reason they pick a new job, higher than the 54 % benchmark for the region.
  • Burnout alarm: More than half of the workforce (54 %) reports moderate to high levels of burnout.

Why it matters

The mix of high office return rates and rising burnout creates a “perfect storm” that could hurt productivity, engagement, and talent retention. Companies that want to attract and keep top talent must move beyond simply mandating office days. They need to design human‑centred workplaces, offer genuine flexibility, and embed sustainable work practices that reduce burnout.

Expert take‑away

Jipu‑Jose James, Managing Director of Project & Development Service (PDS), India, at JLL, said, “This is a pivotal moment for Indian organisations. As hybrid work matures, 83 % of employees are positive about RTO, underscoring the need for workplaces that truly support people.”

Kamya Miglani, Head of Work Dynamics Research, APAC, added, “Employers must go beyond office mandates. They should build workplaces that employees want to join, provide flexibility that improves life quality, tackle burnout, and invest in future‑ready skills.”

Bottom line

Indian companies are beginning to get the right balance between office presence and employee well‑being. Those that keep pace with flexibility, human‑centred design, and burnout prevention will likely win the talent war and maintain strong performance.
