J&K to receive Rs 5.5 billion investment in tourism sector: Omar Abdullah

On Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that the region is set to receive an externally funded investment of ₹5.5 billion for its tourism sector. He expressed hope that the infusion of capital, combined with coordinated efforts across the state, would help revive J&K’s reputation as India’s premier adventure‑tourism destination.

Later that day, Omar Abdullah formally opened Asia’s longest ski drag lift in Kongdori, Gulmarg. The new lift is expected to significantly upgrade the area’s skiing infrastructure and further cement Gulmarg’s status on the global winter‑sports map. He also unveiled a rotating conference hall in Affarwat, Gulmarg. The ceremony was attended by Advisor Nasir Sogandi, MLA Farooq Shah from Gulmarg, and MLA Tanvir Sadiq from Zadibal.

When speaking to a gathering of adventure‑tour operators at the 17th annual Convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) held from December 17th to 20th, Omar highlighted the state’s vast natural assets. He emphasized that combining these assets with professional expertise and coordinated action could easily restore J&K’s former standing in adventure tourism. “Success can’t be measured by a single visit,” he said; “true progress means inviting tourists to return year after year.” He urged the government and tourism stakeholders to focus on creating long‑term engagement with visitors, aiming for a future where travellers are so attracted to Kashmir that they’d hesitate to go elsewhere.

The Chief Minister added that the tourism department and all affiliated agencies must work in tandem to strengthen the sector and enhance the overall visitor experience. “Jammu and Kashmir has faced repeated setbacks and incidents almost monthly, giving the impression that the region is under constant attack,” he lamented. Even the anticipated winter relief didn’t fully materialize, with the season remaining largely dry and harming tourism and those who rely on it for livelihood. Omar called on people to pray for a balanced snowfall that brings joy without causing hardship.
