Ex-NBA veteran Rick Fox running for political office in the Bahamas

Rick Fox is stepping into a new arena – this time, the political one. Friday, he revealed on Facebook that he will seek a seat in the Bahamas’ House of Assembly during the 2026 general elections.

The 56‑year‑old former NBA star was born in Canada but raised in the Bahamas. In his post, he explained that he has been listening to the voices of islanders, picking up their hopes and frustrations, and has decided it’s time to act.

“The Bahamas Must Be First and It Must Start Now,” he wrote. “Today, I’m announcing that I will be a candidate in the next general election. … You’ve shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise. I share that vision. And I’m stepping forward today because we cannot wait any longer to realize a Bahamas that we all envision is possible.”

Fox’s roots run deep in the sport: his mother, Dianne Gerace, was an Olympian who competed in high jump and pentathlon for Canada in 1964. He moved from Canada to his parents’ homeland, played high school basketball first at Kingsway Academy and later in Indiana. After a successful stint with the North Carolina Tar Heels, he spent 13 seasons in the NBA—seven years with Boston and six with Los Angeles—helping the Lakers capture a three‑peat from 2000 to 2002.

Off the court, Fox has built a diverse career, earning over 80 acting credits, including a role in Spike Lee’s 2005 film Highest 2 Lowest. In 2015, he launched the esports organization Echo Fox.

In his campaign announcement, Fox emphasized the need for “transparency” in government.

“As a candidate and as a leader for the Bahamas,” he added. “I will demand transparency, honesty, integrity while demanding a level of excellence from all of us.”
