Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shared exciting news during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York: Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to visit New Delhi in December. This trip highlights the strong India-Russia relations, with Lavrov pointing to a packed agenda that covers trade, military-technical cooperation, finance, humanitarian efforts, healthcare, high-tech innovations, and artificial intelligence. The two nations also coordinate closely through groups like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS, plus direct bilateral talks.
Lavrov emphasized that India handles its own trade decisions with Russia, including purchases of Russian oil. He noted that he spoke with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar just yesterday. Jaishankar will head to Russia this year, while Lavrov plans a trip to India. “We keep up regular exchanges,” Lavrov said. “I don’t even question our trade ties or the oil deals—our Indian partners are fully capable of deciding that for themselves.”
The minister praised Jaishankar’s recent response to U.S. questions about India’s Russian oil imports. When pressed, Jaishankar replied that India is open to buying U.S. oil if the terms work out, but deals with Russia or other countries remain India’s private business, unrelated to U.S.-India ties. “That’s a response full of self-respect, just like Turkey’s stance,” Lavrov added, calling Jaishankar a friend.
Despite U.S. tariffs and secondary sanctions targeting India’s imports of Russian oil, Lavrov assured that the economic partnership between India and Russia faces no real threat. India picks its own partners, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar have made that clear. If the U.S. wants to boost bilateral trade with India, they’re ready to talk terms. But when it comes to economic, military, technological, or other ties with third countries like Russia, India deals directly with those partners.
