Trinamool leader compares Bengal CM Mamata to incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

In Kolkata, a longstanding tradition in West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) party keeps alive by comparing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to India’s revered spiritual icons. The latest example came from TMC Rajya Sabha member Ritabrata Banerjee during a rally in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas district, on Saturday evening.

He spoke out against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states and drew a bold parallel. “Mamata Banerjee stands as India’s only leader uniting folks against divisive communal and caste politics,” Ritabrata said. He likened her to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 16th-century saint who broke down barriers of caste and religion. Just as crowds flocked to Chaitanya wherever he went, Ritabrata noted, massive rallies now follow Mamata Banerjee. “In that sense, she’s the modern incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,” he added.

This isn’t the first time TMC leaders have made such comparisons to highlight Mamata Banerjee’s role in promoting unity and inclusivity. Back in December 2023, State Education Minister Bratya Basu echoed the idea, calling her an incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Basu pointed to her advocacy for all religions and all-encompassing harmony as the perfect match.

That same month, TMC General Secretary Kunal Ghosh took it further. He described Mamata Banerjee as the incarnation of saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa and her nephew, party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, as Swami Vivekananda. “If Mamata is Ramakrishna, Abhishek is his star disciple Vivekananda,” Ghosh explained. He said Bengalis see Abhishek’s life reflecting Mamata’s sacrifices and contributions to the people, much like Vivekananda spread Ramakrishna’s teachings worldwide.

Earlier, in June 2022, TMC MLA Nirmal Maji from Uluberia in Howrah district hailed Mamata Banerjee as the incarnation of Maa Sarada, the spiritual partner of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Maji even claimed Sarada once predicted her rebirth near Kolkata’s famous Kalighat Kali Temple—right where Mamata Banerjee lives today. This drew sharp criticism from Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, which strongly objected to the remarks.

And in July 2023, another TMC MLA, Biswajit Das from Bagda in North 24 Parganas, compared the Chief Minister to Rani Rashmoni. The 19th-century philanthropist founded the iconic Dakshineswar Kali Temple, closely tied to Ramakrishna Paramhansa’s life and legacy.

These vivid comparisons underscore how TMC leaders view Mamata Banerjee as a unifying force in West Bengal politics, blending her leadership with the enduring appeal of India’s spiritual giants like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, Maa Sarada, and Rani Rashmoni.
