A group of people exploring a wooded area of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx found skeletal fragments that turned out to be human remains. They stumbled upon them at about 11:38 a.m., just north of the southbound side of the Major Deegan Expressway. Police and investigators immediately began work near Exit 13, confining the area while the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner removed the remains from the site on a stretcher.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery are still unclear—no one yet knows why the bones were there or how the person died. For the time being, the NYPD and the medical examiner’s office are conducting a joint investigation to uncover the details.
