In Bhopal, the chief of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, Jitu Patwari, has called for the resignation of the state health minister. He says the minister should step down because of the deaths of at least 22 children linked to a cold‑cough syrup sold in Chhindwara.
Patwari told reporters that over 150 bottles of the drug were sold in a single month. He says the owner of the drug company—who was arrested in Tamil Nadu—must receive the death penalty. “Why didn’t the health minister hold the drug controller accountable?” he asked. “The clean chit the minister gave the owner shows corruption.” He added that the BJP is using religious issues to win votes and is attacking Congress.
The Cong leader also demanded the arrest of the drug controller and said the case should be treated as murder. He wants the health minister to resign, and if not, the chief minister should fire him.
Earlier this week, a court in Parasia put the Sresan Pharma owner, Ranganathan, in 10‑day police custody. Ranganathan was brought before the judge on Friday after a night‑time arrest. Chhindwara police said the Special Investigation Team is conducting a medical exam and will finish the investigation in Chennai before returning him to Chhindwara.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has also issued a notice to all states and union territories. The letter, dated October 7, stresses strict adherence to the Drugs Rules, 1945, and urges testing of raw materials and finished medicines before they reach patients. The DCGI’s directive is part of a wider push to prevent future tragedies caused by unsafe drugs.
