Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to kick off a major milestone in Mizoram’s connectivity with the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang New Rail Line on September 13. In an excited post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi called his visit to Aizawl super special. For the first time, this vibrant city will join India’s railway network, thanks to this ambitious project built through tough hilly terrain, complete with several big and small bridges.
“This visit is very special because Aizawl is getting connected to the railway network for the very first time,” PM Modi wrote. He added that the new rail line will supercharge commerce and tourism in the region. During his trip, he’ll also lay the foundation stones for key infrastructure projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore, spanning railways, roadways, energy, sports, and more.
The Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line project is no small feat—it’s carved through challenging hills with 45 tunnels under tricky geological spots, plus 55 major bridges and 88 minor ones. This direct link from Mizoram to the rest of India means safer, faster, and cheaper travel for locals. It will also ensure steady supplies of essentials like food grains, fertilizers, and other goods, making logistics smoother and boosting access across the Northeast.
Adding to the excitement, PM Modi will flag off three new express trains from Sairang (near Aizawl): the Sairang-Delhi Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express, and Sairang-Kolkata Express. Now, Aizawl gets a direct Rajdhani ride to Delhi, while the Guwahati train eases travel between Mizoram and Assam, and the Kolkata one links straight to West Bengal. These routes will open doors to better hospitals, universities, and markets, fostering stronger education, culture, and business ties. Expect more jobs and a tourism boom too!
On the roads front, PM Modi will launch several projects to ease travel in Mizoram. First up is the 45-km Aizawl Bypass Road, costing over Rs 500 crore under the PM-DevINE scheme. It will cut traffic jams in Aizawl, linking up spots like Lunglei, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lengpui Airport, and Sairang Railway Station. Travel time from southern districts to Aizawl could drop by 1.5 hours, a big win for residents.
Then there’s the Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS). This will help horticulture farmers growing dragon fruit, paddy, and ginger by improving ties to the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei Highway. Similarly, the Khankawn-Rongura Road in Serchhip District will give better market access to local farmers and support a new ginger processing plant.
Wrapping up the road upgrades, PM Modi will lay the foundation for the Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai-Siaha Road. This all-weather bridge will slash travel time by two hours and boost cross-border trade via the Kaladan Multimodal Transit project.
Beyond roads and rails, PM Modi will inaugurate projects like the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall, a residential school at Kawrthah, and the Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam. These steps promise to transform Mizoram’s infrastructure, making life easier and opportunities brighter for everyone in the Northeast.
