AIMPLB hails TN govt’s decision to defer Waqf board reconstitution pending SC verdict

Muslim leaders in India are praising the Tamil Nadu government’s smart move to hold off on creating a new Waqf Board until the Supreme Court rules on the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) called the decision timely and brave, highlighting how it keeps things stable for Waqf administration amid ongoing legal battles.

The announcement came on Saturday, and it quickly won nods from Muslim community figures and legal experts. They see it as a solid example of respecting India’s Constitution and staying true to secular values.

AIMPLB spokesperson Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas explained that Tamil Nadu’s approach avoids messy changes to Waqf boards while the top court reviews the amended law. “We thank Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his team for this responsible step right now, when the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 faces judicial review,” Ilyas said. He added that it shows respect for the courts and prevents rushed overhauls of important religious institutions.

Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Minority Affairs, S.M. Nasar, backed this up in a statement. The state not only plans to stick with its current Waqf Board but has also filed a challenge against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 in the Supreme Court. “We won’t set up a new board until we get the final verdict,” Nasar said, stressing the government’s focus on legal steadiness and protecting minority rights.

In an official statement, the AIMPLB encouraged other states to take the same careful path until the Supreme Court settles the law’s constitutionality. They argue it bolsters democratic practices, supports India’s secular and diverse society, and stops confusion in managing religious endowments like Waqf properties.

Dr. Ilyas went further, congratulating Chief Minister Stalin for showing real political guts and understanding the Muslim community’s worries. “This decision gives the community confidence that their religious and charitable assets stay protected under the law and Constitution,” he noted.
