On December 10 in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Pema Khandu spoke highly of the 14th Dalai Lama, calling him “a true beacon of peace” and offering warm, sincere praise.
That date is noteworthy because it marks the 36th anniversary of the Dalai Lama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize—a day the Tibetan government‑in‑exile also celebrates as International Human Rights Day. This year they’ve dubbed it the “Year of Compassion” to coincide with the 90th birthday of the spiritual leader.
Khandu noted that the celebrations are taking place at Chamleng inside the Tawang Monastery and reminded people how the Dalai Lama’s teachings still resonate worldwide.
On his official X account he shared: “Celebrating the 36th Anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize conferred on His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama at Chamleng, Tawang Monastery. A true beacon of peace, may His Holiness’s timeless message of compassion and harmony continue to spread across the world.”
He also posted: “On this sacred day marking the 36th Anniversary of the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama, may we allow the spirit of Ahimsa to settle within us, guiding our thoughts, shaping our actions, and reminding us that peace truly begins with how we treat one another. Long Live His Holiness.”
The Dalai Lama earned the Nobel in 1989 for his steadfast commitment to non‑violence, compassion, and peaceful dialogue.
For the people of Arunachal Pradesh—especially those in Tawang, a major hub of Tibetan Buddhism in India—the anniversary carries deep meaning because of their longstanding cultural and spiritual connection with the Dalai Lama.
In 1959, Chinese troops crushed the Tibetan uprising in Lhasa and forced the Dalai Lama along with more than 80,000 Tibetans into exile across India and neighboring nations. After a treacherous three‑week journey, he lived for about a year in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Today the Tibetan government‑in‑exile resides in Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama and a community of exiled Tibetans continue their efforts to secure full autonomy for Tibet, which remains under Chinese rule.
