JLN dog bite incident: Affected area sanitised to ensure venue remains operational, say sources (Ld)

A stray dog bit a Kenyan official at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships. The unusual incident happened amid the event, prompting quick action from organizers and local authorities to keep things safe.
Stadium staff immediately alerted the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). In response, MCD sent two dog-catching teams to the site. They rounded up all stray dogs on the premises and moved them to shelter homes for proper care and rehab, while following animal welfare rules.
Organizers worked with civic agencies to sanitize the affected areas right away. This ensures the venue stays safe, clean, and ready for athletes and visitors. Sources say the situation is now fully under control, with stronger preventive steps in place to stop any similar issues.
This isn’t the first time stray dogs have caused concerns at the stadium. Back in August, officials asked MCD to tackle the problem by removing strays from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. MCD stepped in then to clear them out.
The issue ties into bigger efforts across Delhi-NCR. On August 22, India’s Supreme Court ordered civic bodies to capture stray dogs and relocate them to shelters. The court highlighted public safety worries and the growing threat of rabies attacks.
Later, the Supreme Court tweaked its order. It now requires that captured dogs get sterilized and vaccinated before release—unless they’re rabid or show aggressive behavior. These moves aim to balance animal care with keeping communities safe from stray dog bites in Delhi.
