Guwahati, Dec 9 (LatestNewsX) – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that the state is rapidly evolving into an education hub, noting that it now hosts 25 medical colleges along with an equal number of universities.
He described the transformation in progress: fifteen medical schools are already operating, while ten more are in various stages of construction. Sarma also highlighted that Assam now has roughly 25–26 universities—some active, others still under development—and that engineering institutions such as IIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar had once seemed unimaginable in the region.
Sarma went on to say that Assam today presents abundant opportunities, allowing educated young people to find career paths. “With all development initiatives like creating a startup ecosystem to industrialisation, the state is witnessing a new era of growth and development. From Skill University to the Semiconductor industry, Assam is all set to become one of the five most developed states of the country,” he added.
He attended the 4th convocation of Cotton University, urging the graduates to lead Assam toward competence and self‑reliance. Addressing the 2,804 alumni, the Chief Minister offered heartfelt congratulations and credited their success to dedication as well as the sacrifices of teachers and families.
On the occasion, Sarma thanked faculty members and parents for supporting the students. Recalling his own days at Cotton College (now Cotton University), he said the experience there shaped his life and propelled his ambition. “As a proud alumnus of Cotton College, now Cotton University, it is a matter of great honour for me to stand before you and address you on this memorable and dignified occasion,” he said.
The Chief Minister praised Cotton University for its special energy, inspiring students to dream bigger, work harder, and aim higher. He noted that when the college became a university, that spirit enlarged, allowing students to honor their legacy while embracing the future with courage, confidence, and clarity of purpose.
He added that convocations always spark new ideas and offer a chance to reflect deeply on what lies ahead. He reminded the graduates that they have earned degrees from an eminent institution and now stand on the threshold of a promising future and a remarkable journey.
