Uncertainty looms over a movie on RG Kar victim

In Kolkata, a new film about the life of R.G. Kar victim Tilottama has sparked uncertainty because her parents still haven’t given permission.

The director, Ujjwal Chatterjee, wants the movie—titled Tilottama—to hit theatres before the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. He has talked to Tilottama’s parents several times, but they have said they will decide only after the justice system delivers a clear outcome.

The father told reporters, “I’m not sure what to do now. The director came to us, but we are waiting for justice. Until that happens, we have no part in the film.” His wife added, “All I can focus on is justice for my daughter. No film will matter until we know who did this and why.”

Ujjwal Chatterjee said in an interview, “I still want to make the film. I have spoken with the parents. They need to give their consent before we move forward, and that can only happen after justice is served.”

The story stems from a tragedy on August 9 last year, when a postgraduate trainee’s body was found in a seminar hall at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident shocked the city and sparked nationwide protests by students, doctors, and ordinary citizens. Sanjoy Roy was convicted and given a life sentence, but the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not yet finished probing the alleged wider conspiracy.

As Kolkata and the rest of West Bengal wait for the final verdict, the debate over the film highlights the tension between artistic expression and the families’ right to privacy and closure.
