Srinagar – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has cleared the Jammu and Kashmir government to start a new cable‑car line to the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam. The decision comes after the 26‑person tragedy that shook the region in April, when Lashkar‑e‑Taiba terrorists attacked the area and killed 25 tourists and a local pony owner.
The NIA, which is still probing the attack, was asked by the union‑territory administration for its view on the cable‑car project. NIA officials said they have no objections from an investigation perspective, clearing the way for the project to move forward.
The cable‑car route, which stretches 1.4 km from the lower terminal near Yatri Niwas in Pahalgam to the upper terminal in Baisaran, has been mapped out by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC). The project will need 9.13 hectares of forest land, which the forest department has earmarked for the venture.
The state government awarded the contract to Ronmas India Pvt. Ltd. The JKCCC has now finalized tenders for a consultant to prepare a detailed project report. The working company plans to launch a topography and geotechnical study soon, but has awaited permission from the Deputy Commissioner in Anantnag and the NIA to visit the site.
Tourism officials say the entire project will cost between ₹100 and ₹120 crore and should be finished in about 18 months, boosting Pahalgam’s appeal to visitors. The Baisaran cable‑car is expected to improve access to the pristine meadow, making the area a top destination for travelers and boosting local livelihoods.
