Actress Yami Gautam, who has been praised for her recent film Haq, said she leaned on a Gen‑Z helper while filming the hit comedy Bala. She shared the story on the set of a luxury hotel in Mumbai’s Juhu area during the movie’s promotion.
In that chat, the discussion drifted to a famous quote from Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan. Khan once said that the most boring job for an actor is to get everything “just right.” He meant actors should be allowed to slip up because that’s where the excitement lies.
When asked if Yami agrees with Khan’s view, she explained that the answer depends on the role and the director’s vision. For some characters, she says, “you can be authentic, just like a person walking down a hallway.” For others, like the TikTok‑obsessed role in Bala, she had to step into a world she had never known.
“Before shooting, I asked a Gen‑Z fan for help. I said, ‘Please teach me,’” she said. “Learning how to use TikTok and understand that culture was a whole different world, and I had to adapt quickly.”
Yami also highlighted the importance of precise preparation. She said she spends a lot of time on pronunciation, fine‑tuning speech so it feels natural. “If a line involves a subtle hint about politics, like referencing Article 370, I still make sure the nuance stays exactly right. That level of detail makes my performance feel balanced, whether it’s in the script or not.”
When she talks about acting freedom, Yami says, “Being uninhibited means I don’t hold back or overthink. I surrender myself to the role—let go of my own worries and fully embrace the character.”
The interview offered a glimpse into how Yami Gautam blends her craft with everyday learning. Watching her work in Haq and Bala shows a versatile actress willing to grow on set, whether it’s mastering TikTok or mastering subtle political references.
