Famed ‘Home Alone’ house being restored to look like it did when Kevin took on the Wet Bandits
The house from the classic Christmas film “Home Alone” is getting a new lease on life.
ABC 7 Eyewitness News reports that the iconic red‑brick Colonial in Winnetka, Illinois—where young Kevin McCallister once outwitted two burglars—has been freshly renovated to bring back its original movie‑like charm.
The spacious property, which once served as a practical filming location for the 1990 holiday hit, was recently sold in pristine condition after an extensive interior overhaul.
The restoration news follows the release of “Home but Alone No More,” a memoir by former owner John Abendshien. In the book, he describes how he and his family lived amid the set during production.
“I had a large master bedroom suite that we converted into an apartment,” Abendshien told ABC. “As long as we kept out of the camera’s line of sight, we were free to roam and watch scenes being filmed.”
The original movie, starring Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, also features celebrated actors such as Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, Catherine O’Hara, John Heard, and John Candy.
More than quarter‑a‑century later, “Home Alone” continues to be a beloved holiday staple, spawning several sequels and remaining a favorite of viewers at Christmas time.
