PM Modi discusses Khalistani extremist issue with British counterpart; says radicalism, violent extremism have no space in democratic societies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday, tackling a range of security and economic issues that have come to the forefront of India‑UK relations.

During the meeting, Modi voiced his deep concern about Khalistani extremism and other forms of violent radicalism. “Freedom must not be abused by extremists,” he said, calling for stronger legal tools on both sides to counter such threats. The leaders tied this message to the recent Manchester terror attack, where a driver struck public footpaths, killing two people, and to the April 2025 bombing in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

In a joint statement, Modi and Starmer rejected terrorism in all its forms. They promised zero tolerance for terrorist acts and pledged a coordinated international effort in line with the UN Charter and international law. Key action points include:

* Counter‑radicalisation and prevention of terrorist recruitment
* Cutting off financing and cross‑border flow of terrorists
* Blocking the use of emerging technologies for terror purposes
* Strengthening judicial cooperation, capacity building, and information sharing
* Enhancing multilateral work through the UN and FATF

Both leaders committed to tougher measures against globally proscribed terrorist groups, their supporters, and financiers.

The visit, which has lasting implications for trade and business ties, saw Starmer engage with Indian business leaders, government officials, and film‑industry representatives at Yash Raj Films. He also attended a football‑related event, showing a broader interest in cultural collaboration.

Starmer arrived in India with the country’s biggest ever business delegation—125 members, including nine vice‑chairs from major UK universities looking to expand partnerships in India. Modi welcomed the delegation at the Raj Bhavan and discussed regional and global challenges. The two leaders also met the university vice‑chairs and spoke about academic and professional exchanges.

A central focus of the visit is the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries, which is moving into the ratification phase. The leaders reviewed the potential for deeper economic engagement and the benefits of tariff reductions under the FTA. They announced new joint investment projects, including a climate‑technology startup fund that will also boost the FTA’s innovation chapter.

Both prime ministers addressed the India‑UK CEO Forum and the Global Fintech Fest on Thursday, underscoring technology and innovation as a key pillar of the continued partnership.

Overall, the meeting reinforced mutual commitments to combat terrorism, strengthen legal frameworks, and deepen economic ties—highlighting the growing importance of India‑UK cooperation on security, trade, and technology.
