In Kolkata on Monday, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rallied in protest after a brutal attack on the party’s MP, Khagen Murmu.
BJP workers marched from the party’s West Bengal headquarters to College Square and Central Avenue, burning an effigy of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and demanding swift action against those responsible.
The rally, led by North Kolkata BJP leader Tamoghna Ghosh, also featured a sit‑in protest. The BJP display burned tyres and carried a photograph of Khagen Murmu, who had sustained serious injuries to his face and head during the assault. Ghosh accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the attack and demanded the Chief Minister face accountability.
Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked on Monday morning while traveling to aid people hit by North Bengal landslides. While Shankar Ghosh suffered only minor bruises, Murmu endured severe head and facial wounds. The incident occurred in Nagrakata, a municipality in Jalpaiguri district. Police later escorted the assailants away after they threw stones, slippers, sticks and bricks at BJP vehicles.
Following the assault, BJP law‑maker Koustav Bagchi wrote to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose urging the state to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution, citing increasing danger to opposition leaders across West Bengal. Bagchi’s letter highlighted the need for immediate steps to safeguard elected representatives in the region.
