J-K: Rajouri administration issues short-term tender notice to build new road in place of damaged Kotranka-Khawas road

Restoration Begins on Damaged Kotranka-Khawas Road in Rajouri After Heavy Rains and Landslides

In Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, officials kicked off repair work on the vital Kotranka-Khawas road on Tuesday. Heavy rains and landslides over the past two weeks wrecked the 32-kilometer stretch, which connects Kotranka sub-division to Khawas tehsil. Built just last year in 2023-24, this road plays a key role in daily life for locals.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Dilmir Choudhary shared that the team is building a brand-new road to replace the damaged one. They’ve already issued short-term tenders, and construction has started with government funding in place. "Damage is there, and restoration is underway," Choudhary told . "We’re setting up medical camps in affected areas too."

The road has been cut off for 15 days now, hitting residents hard. Students can’t reach schools easily, and getting sick people to hospitals turns into a nightmare. Many villagers, like those in Badhal, trek 15-20 kilometers on foot for basics. Jatinder Sharma from Badhal village vented his frustration: "The road closed due to floods, and it affects schools and elders. No one’s fixed it yet—we need it back soon."

Things got worse with ongoing land subsidence, where the ground keeps sinking. This has paused some reconstruction efforts and put homes at risk. At least seven houses suffered major damage, including one two-story building that slid 50 meters but stayed standing. Panic spread as families worried about safety.

Choudhary assured that the administration evacuated people from high-risk spots to safer places. They’re supplying food, essentials, and full support. Compensation for affected families is in the works and should finalize soon. The whole area stays under close watch for any emergencies.

Poonch Faces Similar Woes with Land Subsidence in Kalaban Village

Over in Poonch district, heavy rains triggered land subsidence in Kalaban village, Mendhar sub-division. Authorities moved nearly 400 residents to temporary shelters after cracks appeared in several homes. With help from a local NGO, they’re distributing relief materials like food and supplies.

Officials declared the village unsafe and urged everyone to stay evacuated until it’s safe. Continuous rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has caused these landslides and subsidence issues, disrupting lives across the region. Restoration teams continue working to reconnect communities and prevent further damage.
