ICE detainee found dead in Nassau County jail cell, sparking NY state investigation

A shocking incident unfolded in Nassau County, New York, where a 42-year-old migrant detainee held by ICE died in his cell at the East Meadow jail. Officials found him unresponsive early Thursday morning, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. This marks the first reported death of an ICE detainee in the Nassau County jail since the facility started housing federal immigration detainees earlier this year.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to uncover the cause of the ICE detainee’s death and check if jail staff followed all protocols. The county’s homicide squad and the State Attorney General’s Office are both digging in. Sheriff Anthony Larocco assured the public in a statement, “There is an ongoing investigation which will be thorough and transparent to determine the cause of death.” He added, “Nassau County takes seriously its obligation to treat every prisoner humanely.”

This tragedy hits amid Nassau County’s controversial partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The county set aside 50 cells at the East Meadow lockup to hold migrants picked up in New York City and Long Island. Under the deal, ICE can detain them for up to 72 hours before deportation or transfer to another facility. The feds pay the county $195 per night per detainee.

Since the partnership kicked off in February, Nassau jails have housed more than 1,400 ICE detainees, officials revealed in July. ICE hasn’t commented yet on this migrant detainee’s death.

Democrat Legislator Seth Koslow, who’s running for county executive in November, called it “a tragedy that demands answers.” He plans to push for a legislative hearing to boost transparency and accountability in the jails. Meanwhile, the county just trained 10 police officers to act as ICE agents, ready to help with any potential mass deportations under the Trump administration.

As investigations continue, many are watching closely to see what led to this heartbreaking loss in ICE detention. Stay tuned for updates on the Nassau County jail death and broader migrant detention issues.
