Indian women wrestlers shine in U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship in Serbia

Indian women wrestlers are making headlines at the Under‑23 Senior World Wrestling Championship, which is being held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Five Indian athletes have taken bronze medals, showing the country’s growing strength in the sport.

The bronze medals went to Nishu in the 55‑kg class, Neha Sharma in 57 kg, Pulkit in 65 kg, Shrishti in 68 kg, and Priya in 76 kg. Their performances were praised by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), whose president, Sanjay Kumar Singh, noted the “outstanding effort” of the team.

In addition to the bronzes, two Indian wrestlers have advanced to the final rounds. Hanshika Lamba is competing in the 53‑kg category, while Sarika Malik fights in the 59‑kg weight class. Both will face Japanese opponents for gold on Saturday, turning the spotlight on India’s rising talent in lightweight wrestling.

Earlier in the tournament, Indian Greco‑Roman wrestler Vishvajit More captured a bronze medal in the 55‑kg division. He earned the nation’s first medal at the competition after a dramatic 5‑4 win over a Kazakh wrestler in the bronze‑medal bout. More’s journey began with a decisive win against a Romanian opponent and a technical‑superiority victory over a U.S. wrestler. Though he lost in the quarterfinals to Alibek of the United States, he received a second chance through the repechage. After defeating a Georgian competitor with technical superiority, he faced the Kazakh athlete again and secured the bronze.

These results underscore India’s growing presence on the world wrestling stage, especially at the under-23 level. Fans can expect a thrilling showdown on Saturday as Lamba and Malik battle the Japanese competitors for the top spot.
