Doctors deliver ‘miracle’ baby while removing 22-pound tumor from mother

A woman from Bakersfield recently had an astonishing experience while undergoing surgery for a large ovarian tumor. The 22‑pound cyst was slated for removal, but just before the operation a routine pregnancy test turned out positive. According to a press release from Cedars‑Sinai, Suze Lopez—who herself is a nurse—had long dealt with irregular periods and occasional abdominal discomfort, making the news almost unbelievable after 17 years of trying for a second child.

After the test, Lopez and her husband Andrew rushed to the hospital because she began experiencing sharp stomach pain. Dr. John Ozimek, head of Labor and Delivery, and his team ran a series of tests that revealed a rare condition: an abdominal ectopic pregnancy. “We found a nearly full‑term baby boy in a small space near the liver, his backside resting on the uterus,” Ozimek explained. “It’s almost unheard of for a pregnancy so far outside the uterus to develop to that stage.”

The surgical team, which included 30 specialists, worked quickly. They first lifted the enormous cyst, clearing the way for the delivery. While the baby was being handed over to neonatal care, Lopez started bleeding heavily. Luckily, anesthesiologist Dr. Michael Sanchez had already set up a specialized tank that pumped 11 units of blood into her body, keeping her stable while the surgeons finished the procedure.

The newborn, named Ryu Lopez, weighed 8 pounds and emerged with very few health issues. Suze is focused on a swift recovery so she can be with her son as soon as possible. Andrew calls their little boy—and the whole experience—a pair of miracles, and Suze says, “God gave [her] this baby so that he could be an example to the world that God exists—miracles, modern‑day miracles, do happen.”
