US Energy Secretary “huge fan” of India, says looks forward to “more energy trade with India”

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright shared his big admiration for India during a press conference in New York on Wednesday. He made it clear that the United States wants to boost energy cooperation with New Delhi, focusing on key areas like natural gas, coal, nuclear energy, and clean cooking fuels.
“I’m a huge fan of India. We love India,” Wright said at the New York Foreign Press Centre. “We look forward to more energy trade and interactions back and forth with India.”
Wright didn’t shy away from tough topics, like the geopolitical pressures India faces amid the Ukraine war. He explained how sanctioned Russian oil ends up in places like China, India, and Turkey, helping fund the conflict. “The Russian war in Ukraine is brutal. We all want it to end,” he noted. “But where does that oil go? It goes to those countries, and that friction is real.”
Even with disagreements over India’s Russian oil imports, Wright stressed the US commitment to stronger energy ties. “We want to end that war—I believe India does too—and expand our cooperation in natural gas, coal, nuclear, clean cooking fuels, and liquid petroleum gas,” he said. “Nothing would make us happier than more trade and energy partnerships with India.”
When asked directly about India-Russia oil trade by , Wright urged India to rethink its choices. “There are plenty of oil exporters out there. India doesn’t need Russian oil—it’s just cheaper because they sell it at a discount,” he replied. “Nobody wants to buy it, but India has decided to go for the deal and look the other way, which puts money in the pockets of those behind the war that’s killing thousands every week.”
He added that the US isn’t out to punish India. “You can buy oil from almost any country except Russia—that’s our stance. America has oil to sell, and so do others. We just want to stop the war and build our relationship with India.”
