Exclusive | Pastor who inspired Charlie Kirk’s final book on the Sabbath reveals the backstory
WASHINGTON — David Engelhardt, the pastor of Kings Church in New York City, shared how he convinced Charlie Kirk—founder of Turning Point USA—to adopt the Christian practice of observing the Sabbath. The two met for lunch in the summer of 2021, and Engelhardt recalled that Kirk was feeling exhausted and having trouble sleeping. He suggested that Kirk carve out a full day to rest and reconnect with God and family—a suggestion Kirk initially resisted but later embraced.
Kirk’s last book, Stop, in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life, hit the shelves this Tuesday and immediately became a bestseller. The book urges readers to dedicate a week’s day to rest. Engelhardt said he is “the best thing he’s ever written” and praised its depth and clarity. He mentioned that he had watched Kirk transition from doubt to commitment after a conversation where Engelhardt offered “weak theological arguments”—yet Kirk admitted his spirit was moved.
Before his death, Kirk openly discussed how the discussion with Engelhardt spurred the book. He referenced his earlier reluctance—citing the need to raise money, run companies, and host a three‑hour daily show—as a reason Sabbath seemed impractical. Nevertheless, after further reflection and talking with friend and talk‑show host Dennis Prager, he decided to observe the Sabbath.
Engelhardt explains that for Christians, the Sabbath is about trust: “do I trust God or not?” For non‑Christians, he notes, it’s about recognizing nature’s rhythms of rest. He said the practice involves giving up strenuous or stressful activities each week, while allowing creative or fun projects.
Kirk’s connection to Engelhardt came through his now‑widowed wife, Erika, who first met the pastor in 2019. After Engelhardt criticized Black Lives Matter protests post‑George Floyd, Erika introduced them, and they quickly bonded. She has since promoted Kirk’s final book on a media tour.
