On November 24, Shiv Sena‑UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray sent a joint letter to Maharashtra’s State Election Commissioner, Dinesh Waghmare, asking him to act immediately to correct serious irregularities and confusion in the voter lists for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections.
They also requested that the commission grant a 21‑day window for people to submit suggestions or objections; if no adequate responses are received, they urged the cancellation of the elections until the voter rolls are fully rectified.
Both leaders highlighted how the latest voter lists contain alarming inconsistencies and frequent changes that could erode the transparency and integrity of the electoral process.
In the letter they pointed out that the final revised list for the BMC elections, dated October 30, 2025, was released too late and in a confusing manner, depriving voters and parties of essential information.
They questioned why updates to the supplementary rolls for women were delayed and demanded clarification from the commission on key procedural issues.
Aditya Thackeray, a Shiv Sena‑UBT senior leader and former minister, told reporters that confusion stemmed from new names being added and old ones deleted or altered without clear notice or adherence to established rules.
He expressed worry about duplicate records, claiming that more than 900,000 duplicate entries have been spotted in the rolls.
Citing the joint letter, he added that the commission must show exactly how these discrepancies will be corrected before the polls, insisting on a thorough audit of the methods used to update and verify voter names.
The Thackerays criticized the State Election Commission for failing to set up clear mechanisms and technical protocols for voter registration in Mumbai, a shortfall that leads to confusion and potential disenfranchisement.
“Is there no technical wisdom left, or is it a case of ‘less intelligence, more confusion’?” they asked, urging authorities to ensure the rights of legitimate voters are protected and that all irregularities are resolved promptly.
They urged the commission to halt further updates to the voter list until the problems are fixed, and to inform the public about the steps being taken to guarantee a transparent election.
The duo warned that without decisive action, Mumbai’s democratic standing will suffer, and challenged officials to demonstrate their capability to safeguard citizens’ voting rights.
In short, the Thackerayas called for accountability, demanding that the commission restore order and faith in the electoral system.
